History

We grew up on the flavors of Philadelphia’s 9th Street Italian market and hoagies served by countless mom and pop shops throughout the city…

Spicy red peppers. Savory Genoa salami. Sweet basil pesto. Hot roasted pork. Crisp breaded chicken cutlets. And most importantly, warm and delicious, freshly baked bread. But when we moved to DC, we found we couldn’t truly find the flavors of home.

In 2008, we decided that if someone else wasn’t going to make a standout Philly-style hoagie, it was time we manned up and did it ourselves. We found a funky old building on H Street NE with caved-in ceilings and busted up walls that we made our home. Out came the sledgehammers and hard hats.  Using reclaimed and overlooked materials like wood pallets and recycled rebar we built ourselves a kitchen and a dining room, complete with a garage door to welcome in our neighbors.

We searched high and low for the best ingredients. We tested recipe after recipe looking for the perfect hoagie roll.  We tasted different prosciutto, salamis, and more cheese than you could imagine. We breaded and fried chicken cutlets. We made meatballs by hand. We roasted endless turkeys, beef and pork. All to ensure we captured the flavors we loved in our youth and wanted to share with you.

We refused to compromise and that core belief lives on in everything we do today. Our locally baked bread is delivered fresh every morning and we never use it the next day. We still roast turkeys, pork and beef in-house daily.  We work with a supplier in Virginia who provides us with the best old-world, Italian-style cured meats. We cut our vegetables fresh multiple times a day and only make small batch recipes of sauces and dressings to ensure we deliver the freshest product to our customers on every visit.

We’ve opened a few more restaurants since those early days, but we’re still two guys from Philly who opened a hoagie shop with the hope of serving the food we love to customers like you.  So whether you’re hungry for a hoagie or interested in joining our team or just want to shoot the &#%!@, stop on by and say hi.  We built Taylor Gourmet to remind us of home, and you’re invited over.
