Who We Are

Casey Patten and David Mazza, young Philadelphia natives with Italian roots, had been searching for a hoagie that would satisfy their tastes since their move to Washington D.C. in 2002. After discovering there was no place to purchase a hoagie with the true Italian quality they were accustomed to, the two decided it was time to start traveling, researching, and tasting in hopes of opening their own version of a Philly-style Italian deli.

In 2007, Casey and David saw an opportunity present itself in a vacant barber shop in the up-and-coming H Street NE "Atlas District". Casey and David's modern vision was to erect an Italian hoagie shop and gourmet market in a contemporary, industrial space while still maintaining a rustic home-felt atmosphere. Together, with designers from Grupo 7, they replaced caved-in ceilings with materials like wood shipping pallets, chain link fence posts, exposed brick and hot-rolled steel. The property was then opened up to the street with what is now their signature roll-up aluminum garage door (most recently grazing the pages of the New York Times Travel section).

After construction was complete, Taylor Gourmet came to fruition - an Italian Deli and Market specializing in authentic hoagies (named after popular Philly spots) and market goods. Taylor uses an old world Italian loaf with sesame seeds, hand selected Italian cured meats, home roasted Turkey, Pork and Beef and aged cheeses. In addition to the hoagies - pastina salads and sides such as homemade mozzarella sticks and arancini are the perfect additions to indulge your tastebuds and take you back to the city of Brotherly Love.

Green

At Taylor, we not only believe in providing the highest quality food and service, we also believe in serving as stewards of our surrounding community and environment. That means creating and maintaining a healthy indoor environment for our customers and staff as well as integrating eco-practices into our daily operations.

As our business grows, we will continually look for ways to be "greener" in order to minimize the amount of waste we produce, energy and water we use, and reduce our overall carbon footprint. To ensure that we are implementing the right green initiatives for our business, we've hired Green Living Consulting (GLC) - a DC-based company that helps businesses and households adopt eco-practices. They performed an independent assessment of our operations, for which we currently rank as "Bronze" level certified green business. We continue to work with GLC to implement additional green practices and products and move further along the green spectrum.

Our green mission is to demonstrate environmental and community stewardship by promoting a more sustainable operation that compliments our quality of service and helps foster social and eco-awareness in the community around us.

Green Initiatives To-Date

  • Reusing Materials
    • Much of the original building structure is still in-tact and has been incorporated into the interior design. Wood and other materials have been reused in different ways - the original garage door now serves as a back patio gate/entrance.
    • We’ve re-used wood pallets as shelving to reduce the number of trees needed to build our store.
  • Promoting healthy indoor air quality
    • Our wood pallets are sealed with SoySeal - a non-toxic, non-flamable sealant that produces no fumes or vapors and is made from renewable resources
    • We use green cleaning products - keeping our market healthy for customers and employees, and reducing our impact on the natural environment
  • Promoting healthy indoor air quality
    • Energy efficient and Energy Start certified heating and cooling systems help reduce the amount of energy we consume daily
    • Compact fluorescent lightbulbs are used where possible to save energy and reduce our emissions
  • Reducing waste
    • Our fry oil is recycled with Greener Oil, which recycles 100% of its oil into biodiesel.
    • Recyclable or compostable products are used where possible to reduce our contribution of waste to landfills.
    • We recycle our bottles, cans and cardboard.
